🥩 Ankole Rump Steak

Legacy & Evolution
Cut from the hindquarter of the prized Ankole, this rump steak captures the essence of Africa’s legendary cattle. Historically valued for their milk, hides and blood (used ceremonially), Ankoles have in recent years gained acclaim in South Africa for their beef quality. The introduction of Ankole herds into South African stud programmes over the past twenty years has refined the breed’s genetic traits, enhancing tenderness and marbling while retaining their signature lean character.

Taste & Nutrition
Ankole Rump Steak offers a balanced harmony of robust beef flavour and refined texture. It’s leaner than conventional rump, yet marbled enough to provide succulence. The meat’s natural earthiness hints at the grass and shrubs of African savannas, while its tender bite rivals premium steaks worldwide. Nutritionally, it’s a powerhouse: low in cholesterol, high in Omega‑3 and Omega‑9, and packed with clean protein.

Serving Suggestions
Ideal for grilling or pan‑searing, this steak is best cooked to medium‑rare or medium to preserve its juiciness. Rest it well after cooking, slice against the grain and season simply with salt and pepper to highlight its nuanced flavour. Whether it’s a weeknight dinner or a special celebration, Ankole Rump Steak delivers royal quality and celebrates South Africa’s success in bringing this ancient breed to modern tables.

South Africa’s fascination with Ankole cattle has paid off in spectacular fashion. In June 2022 the Ankole Cattle Breeders’ Society’s national auction at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala game farm drew 200 registered buyers (up from about 80 the previous year) and raked in more than R21 million Top lots included a Cumulus NANK 10‑120 bull that sold for R1.65 million—a bull originally purchased from the president’s Ntaba Nyoni Ankole stud—and a record R950 000 for a heifer. Ramaphosa himself offered six lots that fetched R2.37 million. Demand is fuelled by the breed’s novelty and limited genetics; only about 800 Ankole cattle were registered nationally at the time. Buyers value them for their impressive horns and “wow‑factor” in ecotourism and traditional ceremonies like lobola, as well as for their hardiness in tough grazing conditions
